What does an AI agent supervisor do?
An AI agent supervisor is the person who decides which of an AI agent's proposed actions actually happen. The agent prepares the work: a refund, a DNS change, a merge. The supervisor reads what it would really do, checks who asked and why, and approves it, picks a safer option, denies it, or stops an agent that has been manipulated.
Try it: one proposal, four decisions
The agent prepares the change; nothing reaches the platform until the supervisor decides. Pick a decision and watch where the proposal goes.
Approve: the change goes through exactly as proposed.
Why the role exists
AI agents act through keys: a Stripe key, a Cloudflare token, a GitHub app. With a key, an agent can do anything the key allows, instantly. Most of what it proposes is routine and right. A few actions can't be undone, move money, or hand someone access, and a few requests reach the agent from people who shouldn't be giving it orders.
A supervisor sits between the proposal and the change. Nothing happens until a person has looked.
The four decisions
- Approve what is routine and right. Blocking real work has a cost too.
- Take the other option when the agent offers a narrower, safer version, and it really is the better one.
- Deny what is wrong or harmful. The agent can come back with a better proposal.
- Deny and block an agent that has been manipulated, for example by instructions hidden in an email or a log. A clumsy agent only needs a deny.
What a good supervisor checks
- What exactly would happen, written by the tool, not by the agent
- How much money, which website, which repository, which people
- Who asked, through which channel, and whether they could
- Whether it can be undone
- Whether the agent is following an instruction it found in the data it was reading
No coding needed
Supervising an agent is about reading a proposal, not writing code. The skills are judgement and a few platform facts: what a refund really does, why a deleted DNS record breaks email, why a moved version tag breaks customers' installs.
How to learn it
Human Queue Training has three free courses, each modelled on a real platform, where an agent makes real-world proposals and you decide. After every call you see what the proposal really was and how the platform works. Pass an exam and you become a Certified AI Agent Supervisor.
